Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Hamthrax

For a few days it was just an occasional cough. Sunday evening it became cough plus fever. Monday morning? Full-on migraine, complete with swaths of light across my entire field of vision and a painful reaction to any bright light source or sharp sound. (This is my first experience with migraines, but I have it on good authority that my diagnosis is accurate.) Oh, and the aforementioned cough & fever.

No, I don’t know if it’s the so-called “swine flu,” and I don’t care. I just want it to hurry up and get over with. I’ve barely left my room since 8pm Sunday, and I’m beyond tired of the sight of these walls. And ceiling, considering how much time I’ve spent in bed. Today I went from mostly-feverish-and-nauseous to hacking-up-a-lung (and feverish). MY, WHAT FUN.

And it looks like I’m not the only one who came down sick, damn it all. I hope everyone else has an easier time of it than I’ve had so far. I apologize to those of you that I’m responsible for infecting, too.

Bleh.

These are the occasions when audiobooks are invaluable! Audible.com has very reasonable membership plans and a great selection of Terry Pratchett books. (I like the ones read by Stephen Briggs the best; Nigel Planer’s narration isn’t as lively.)

Problem is, I’m still highly sensitive to noises and bright lights… I’m barely on the computer today, and was even more barely so yesterday. So no music, no shows, no nothing. I was glad to be able to read a book yesterday.

Besides… I’m not really a huge Pratchett fan. *wry smile*

Oh… that’s too bad. I think being able to enjoy a good book (or audio or TV) is the only upside to being sick.

I actually wasn’t a real fan of Pratchett’s work until I listened to “Going Postal.” Hearing the work performed adds so much! I also think his work has improved a lot since his early books. He seems to have really hit his stride around book 24 (“The Fifth Elephant”, which is still my favorite).

That sucks. Sounds like you have a riff on the junk I’ve been fighting for the last four days. (Look forward to the part where the little muscles around your diaphragm hurt every time you cough or sneeze!)

I’m afraid I don’t have any advice, but you do have my sympathy. This crud ain’t fun.

Ohgawd, I’m right there with you. Apparently “all” I’ve got is a cold — no fever or other flu symptoms, just the horrid cough & a little achy — and I’m utterly miserable. Lyse keeps asking if I’m going to be okay. I hope you’re feeling much better very soon.

Oh, and often migraines can be eased a bit with a cold cloth to the back of the neck or over the eyes. A good dose of caffeine can also help, both by constricting blood vessels (migraines are thought to be at least partly caused by blood vessels in the head dilating too quickly), and by increasing the efficacy of OTC meds like Tylenol. *hugs*

Hopefully it’ll be a long time before I have to worry about migraine remedies ever again… but good to know, nonetheless!
