  • Past, Present, Future – Round Ten

Ten weeks of this? And we haven’t all gotten bored yet? Incredible.

PAST: The connection between our brains and our mouths is supposed to be governed by a buffer of common sense and wisdom. Of course, that wisdom and sense are lacking when we’re young. Tell us about a golden moment when your pre-teen self said something you shouldn’t have, right in front of God and everybody.

PRESENT: Our buffer is always an imperfect device. What was the last time you slipped and fell on your own tongue, as it were?

FUTURE: Flipping the coin for a moment, think about something you’d really like to say to somebody, some day when you can get away with it (last day on the job, for instance). And, of course, you have to tell us about it. You can obscure the names and locations as much as you like, however, to protect the guilty.

There you have it, another round done and gone. Leave a comment if you choose to answer it here or on your own site, please! And as always, the return link is http://greyduck.net/ppf which will always point to the most current entry.

And I really will get my answers to this and the previous two done up soon. I promise, by the end of the weekend, unless the big earthquake hits and Portland is flattened. Honest.

  • Past, Present, Future – Round Nine

PAST: When we’re kids, we don’t know any better. This is true of so many things, but for our purposes this week we’re talking about movies we loved that make us cringe today. Tell us about one or two movies that you used to love that you probably shouldn’t have.

PRESENT: As we reach adulthood we learn, among other things, that some bad movies are their own reward. Whether they’re a guilty pleasure or just an excuse to get friends together for a riffing session, what skeletons are lurking in your cinematic closet?

FUTURE: You have the (substandard) equipment, you have the (miniscule) budget, you even have some poor schmucks who’ve been conned into being cast and crew. Lights! Camera! Action! But wait, what’s this deliberately schlocky movie about?

As always, leave a comment with either your answers or a link thereto. And when you link back, do so to this URL which always directs visitors to the latest version: http://greyduck.net/ppf/

(Yes, I know my answers aren’t in yet for last week. It’s been a long, long week in several ways, okay? I’ll take care of it this weekend, honest.)

  • Past, Present, Future – Round Eight

It’s been a busy week and today promises to be the capper, so let’s get right on with this, what say?

PAST: When we’re kids we want to be noticed, adored, and most of all, world-famous. What crazy, improbable scheme did you plan to ride to the top?

PRESENT: What would you like to be famous for now?

FUTURE: The eyes of the world are upon you as you stand, award clasped to your chest, before the cameras. Who, in your acceptance speech, do you thank?

Leave a comment either with your answers or a link to them, and if you link to the PPF use the usual URL (http://greyduck.net/ppf/) which will always direct visitors to the most recent entry. Thanks!

(Once again, my answers will show up in the comments… eventually. There’s lots to do today. *sigh*)

  • Past, Present, Future – Round Seven

(Edited, 25 April 2003, because of continual poor linkage.)

If you came here via Globe Of Blogs, the link you followed is incorrect. To get to the most recent entry you can click the PPF channel link over there to the right, or bookmark this URL: http://greyduck.net/ppf/. And here’s hoping that the update request I sent to Globe Of Blogs is acted upon soon. It’s been a few weeks, so pardon me if I don’t hold my breath…

    (End edit, begin original content.)

By the time anyone can read this, I’ll be in the Seattle area at an anime convention. Through the magic of post-dated journal entries, I still have the power to bring you this week’s PPF:

PAST – Is it true that everybody has one great travel adventure in their childhood? Let’s find out. If you’ve ever had one, tell us about it.

PRESENT – And then tell us about the last time you travelled out of your hometown. (If you’re a Portlander, crossing the Columbia into Vancouver doesn’t count. So there.)

FUTURE – Solar System Tours, Inc has just offered you an all-expenses round trip to view the planet of your choice. It’ll involve several months of travel and a couple of cryogenic freezings, but it’s bound to be worth it. Which planet do you choose, though?

This time I’ll put my answers into the comments. (I’m still experimenting, okay? I decided that my parentheticals were distracting from the presentation of the questions…) You are free to do the same, or just answer these on your own website and leave a comment here so we know how to find ’em. And remember, when you link back use this URL: http://greyduck.net/ppf/

There’ll be all kinds of updating when I get back. Until then I bid you all, friends and strangers alike, a wonderful weekend.

  • Past, Present, Future – Round Six

As Geoffrey and I discuss ways to shed all semblance of artistic integrity (Styx’s “Come Sail Away” set to Tenchi Muyo footage, for instance), it dawns on me that it’s kinda Friday. Which makes it PPF time. Perhaps I should, to quote any number of Monty Python sketches, “Get on with it!”

PAST – At some point in our childhood we’re each one of us an artist of some sort, even if it’s just a scam artist. Tell us about something you created and showed off to parents and friends. Preferably it should be something with high embarrassment potential, of course.

(I designed a vehicle of some sort once, all done with a straight-edge tool and pencil. Somehow I managed to have it shown off as part of the school’s art exhibit. It was ruddy awful. I should’ve stuck to writing. Then again, we can see how that’s turned out, can’t we?)

PRESENT – What was your most recent artistic endeavor, regardless of whether it’s seen the light of day?

(Mwahahahaha… I am a four-time anime music video creator. Damn, but I do rock this town.)

FUTURE – When they’ve perfected the direct interface between your thoughts and the tools so that pure imagination is all it takes to create any kind of imagery you see fit, what’s the first thing you’ll dazzle mankind with?

(A series of spectacular light shows set to music. Not videos, but shapes and beams and fogs and color, changing and pulsating in the sky. Magic in the air, oh yes.)

Leave a comment with the link to your answers, or the answers themselves, and when you link back please use this URL: http://greyduck.net/ppf/

    Thank you, and enjoy!

  • Past, Present, Future – Round Five

Spring has sprung. The country’s at war. (And yes, in fact this is my very first mention here of that particular bit of idiocy.) For some reason the song that came to mind this morning was Midnight Oil’s “Too Much Sunshine”.

PAST – So tell us, did you get too much sunshine as a kid? Or not enough?

(It depends on how you look at it. I think I spent a lot of my childhood out of doors. Nowadays I have the soul of a cave-dwelling hermit, except for when I get the urge to walk in the forests. I love trees.)

PRESENT – Being someone with a mild case of seasonal depression, I look forward to the return of sunshine to the world. Being someone who also loves living in a lively green part of the world, I respect and even enjoy the various kinds of rain we receive. Are you a rain or shine person?

(Oh wait, I already answered this as part of the question. Damn I’m clever.)

FUTURE – You’re appointed by the Joint Chiefs the task of coming up with a better term than “Sunshine Units” to describe nuclear radiation doses. Give it your best shot, Colonel.

(Sir, I respectfully submit that “Sunshine Units” is a frelling absurd way to describe lethal radiation. In its place I suggest the term “Fizz,” which is clever because the “fizz” comes from nuclear “fission.” Er, yes sir, I know that we have fusion bombs. Sir, most Americans don’t know the difference between fission and fusion. Hell, most Americans don’t bat an eyelash when the President says “nuke-yew-ler.” Yes sir, that was disrespectful, and I apologize.)

You have to know the drill by now. Leave a comment with a link or your answers. When linking back to the PPF, please use http://greyduck.net/ppf/ as that link will always take a visitor to the most recent entry. Thank you, and have a great weekend.

Oh, and if you want to hear the Midnight Oil song, ask me and I’ll hook you up…
