Past, Present, Future – Round Seven

(Edited, 25 April 2003, because of continual poor linkage.)

If you came here via Globe Of Blogs, the link you followed is incorrect. To get to the most recent entry you can click the PPF channel link over there to the right, or bookmark this URL: http://greyduck.net/ppf/. And here’s hoping that the update request I sent to Globe Of Blogs is acted upon soon. It’s been a few weeks, so pardon me if I don’t hold my breath…

(End edit, begin original content.)

By the time anyone can read this, I’ll be in the Seattle area at an anime convention. Through the magic of post-dated journal entries, I still have the power to bring you this week’s PPF:

PAST – Is it true that everybody has one great travel adventure in their childhood? Let’s find out. If you’ve ever had one, tell us about it.

PRESENT – And then tell us about the last time you travelled out of your hometown. (If you’re a Portlander, crossing the Columbia into Vancouver doesn’t count. So there.)

FUTURE – Solar System Tours, Inc has just offered you an all-expenses round trip to view the planet of your choice. It’ll involve several months of travel and a couple of cryogenic freezings, but it’s bound to be worth it. Which planet do you choose, though?

This time I’ll put my answers into the comments. (I’m still experimenting, okay? I decided that my parentheticals were distracting from the presentation of the questions…) You are free to do the same, or just answer these on your own website and leave a comment here so we know how to find ’em. And remember, when you link back use this URL: http://greyduck.net/ppf/

There’ll be all kinds of updating when I get back. Until then I bid you all, friends and strangers alike, a wonderful weekend.

Past: When I was about 13, my sister and I were unceremoniously dumped off to stay with an older couple for a few months while Mom did… whatever she was doing at that time. (No, that’s a topic for another day.) Ken and Virginia Savage were great surrogate parents that spring and summer, and took us on a cross-country trip that included some spelunking, lots of monuments, a bit of a religious pilgrimage and many many road-trip games. It’s absolutely the best summer of my youth. Hell yeah.

Present: The last time I left the Portland area was when our little family trekked down to Riddle to see my Mom before she moved back to Alaska.

Future: I’m torn between Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter for the Spots and inner moons, Saturn for the rings. Tough call. Maybe I’d pay extra to see both. Yeah, that’s it.

Past: My parents and I ended up in this little texan town called Brownstone. We went across the border to visit Mexico. It was polluted, and twice as hot as texas, because of the pollution. My sister ended up having an asthma attack, and this really nice mexican woman came out and gave us a cold coke for her. It was the nicest thing a stranger’s ever done for me or anyone I know

Present-Last summer I went to England. First time I was ever on a plane, first time I was ever out of the country besides the afternoon in mexico I mentioned, and the first time I traveled without my parents. It was the most awesome experience I’ve ever had, and I loved it.

Future: Saturn. It’s all about the rings 😛

Hee hee! I was 15, and got to go **SANS PARENTAL UNITS** to Europe! It was great. I went to 7 countries in a month, and had a blast in all of them. I went through the People to People Student Ambassador program, so was with 29 other students ages 15 – 18, and we only had 2 chaperones for the whole of us. We also got to have two home-stay visits, and lots of tours through towns. As it was 1989, in August, E. and W. Germany was still in existance. I went to Austria, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, E. Germany and W. Germany. Interestingly enough, we went through E. Germany the week that the Wall Concert was taking place, and had to be re-routed through to Dresden instead of Berlin due to a heightened threat to our security.

Hmmm… Last time I travelled out of my hometown, other than down south to Eugene would be last summer. I went back to my hometown of Port Townsend, WA (up by the Canuk border) and went to my HS reunion. Scary!

Hmmm. Does it have to be a planet? ‘Cause I’ve always thought the Crab Nebula was really nifty and I wanted to see it up close and personal… If it has to be a planet, probably Pluto, if only because there’s some new evidence that’s come through that says that it’s highly possible it was similar to Earth in the earlier part of the Solar System’s career. It’d be interesting to see if there’s any proof to that…
