Past, Present, Future – Round Four

I could have picked “life” or “death” as an appropriate seed idea this week, but I think I can go one better. And I’ll even put my answers in, this time.

PAST – Music is just another of those deeply personal things that affects all of us in subtly different ways. One of the most powerful is the way it brings us back to an earlier time. Tell us about a song that takes you way, way back.

(You know what takes me back to New York faster than anything? Those old Simon & Garfunkel standards. Pick one, any one, and suddenly I’m back in that cluttered bedroom holding the album sleeve in my hands and reading the lyrics.)

PRESENT – How about giving us a quick glance at the music you’ve been listening to lately?

(A few tracks from the first Linkin Park album, some Space Brothers, Kevin Gilbert and Toy Matinee, Midnight Oil, VAST, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, some random stuff from anime music videos and what-not. Not necessarily in that order.)

FUTURE – Mega-palooza 2030 is coming, and all of your favorite musical artists are on the bill (even if some of them are actually holographic recreations). Name the headliner and a few supporting acts.

(Genesis, including Phil, Peter, Steve and even Ray. Pink Floyd, including Sid and Roger, mainly because I’ve never been to a Floyd show. Kevin Gilbert in some capacity, any capacity. The Pet Shop Boys will be running the discoteque at the opposite end of the venue. Midnight Oil will open the show, because nobody gets you moving like the Oils.)

You know the drill by now, I hope. Leave a comment with either your answers or a link to ’em, and if you link back to the PPF please use this address: http://greyduck.net/ppf/

This one’s for Uncle George, and for all of the Kerezman clan, artists that we all are deep down inside.

oi! I LOVE Simon and Garfunkel

Past: Everclear reminds me of hanging out with my sister back in high school, Matchbox 20 Mad Season album reminds me of my old roommate, it was the only CD of mine she’d ever let me play in the room.

Present: Idlewild, The Coral, Good Charlotte.

Future: Everclear headlining, support: Saves The Day, Ben Folds, and Idlewild

Anything by Janis Joplin, The Kingston Trio, The Irish Rovers, Fleetwood Mac, or The New Christy Minstrals. They were the first bands I ever listened to, and my mom and I used to sing along with them. We’d also sit around the fire, my mom with a guitar on her knee, and sing songs by them. It was great. I miss those times.

Currently I’m listening to the local Classic Rock station. They just did the new one by John Mellencamp. At home, I have been listening to a mix of “sex” songs (all having to do with sex), as well as Vertical Horizon’s “Everything She Wants”, and Alanis Morrisette’s “Jagged Little Pill”. Occasionally I will listen to my “Sad Song” compilations, which include stuff from Melissa Etheridge and Reba McIntyre.

Uhhhh… I have no clue… Let’s see… Considering they’re mummified and yet still moving, probably the Rolling Stones will headline, if only for the amazement factor, and the other prominent bands will include Coldplay, Green Day, Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morrisette, and Godsmack.

I didn’t get a chance to answer on Friday, but here goes:

PAST: “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” always takes me back to the evening rides back from my grandparents’ house. And Billy Ocean songs always remind me of going to the community pool.

PRESENT: I really listen to the same stuff as I always have – Simon & Garfunkel, Billy Joel, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder – but I have more alternative and metal now, thanks to becoming a more avid weightlifter.

FUTURE: I think I’d have REO Speedwagon, Billy Joel and Elton John (again), Styx, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones and Harry Chapin. And, for my godson, my opening act would be Wayne Newton.
