Of all the things I could have gotten for my birthday, I think I’m glad I didn’t get an asteroid impact.
Turns out that on the 8th of March, a Tunguska-calibre asteroid passed close to the Earth, almost as close as the Moon is. Scientists didn’t know about it until after it had passed because it came from the direction of the sun, a literal blind spot in the effort to catalog near-Earth objects in space.
