Month: October 2002

  • Random Monday Bloggage

First off, my buddy John Taylor’s first major commissioned website project is now online. Check out the Posterman site if you’re into classic movie posters.

Mari may have slacked a bit on the Friday Five action over the past month or so, but that’s okay. She’s a busy woman. Her Friday Fives are all caught up now, though!

Last and possibly least, we have… this. I can’t think of anything truly clever to say about it, though. I’m counting on my faithful readers to make up for it in the quackbacks, okay?

  • Friday Five By The Numbers

    • If you could only choose 1 cd to ever listen to again, what would it be? – One? Only ONE? Ack! I live and die by my music. Okay, okay, if that’s how you want it. The special edition ‘Toy Matinee.’ There’s not one bad song on the original version, and one of the bonus tracks (Blank Page) quite eloquently states my own artistic frustration. Kevin Gilbert, we hardly knew ye. People, you must buy ‘Toy Matinee’ and Kevin’s solo work, ‘Thud.’ Do it now. I’ll wait. Go on.
    • If you could only choose 2 movies to watch ever again, what would they be? – This is a tougher question. In this fantasy scenario, I’d say that one film would be Miyazaki’s ‘Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind’ in some sort of complete, uncut and either well-subbed or well-dubbed form. (Let’s assume I have a DVD player and can have it both ways.) The botched dub of ‘Nausicaa’ known as ‘Warriors of the Wind’ was my first exposure to feature-length anime, and I still treasure it most highly. I’m not sure what the other film would be. You could set me up with one out of a number of other Miyazaki films (‘My Neighbor Totoro’ or ‘Princess Mononoke’ or even ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’) and I’d be quite content. I can’t imagine which live-action film I could stand to be limited to, I’m afraid.
    • If you could only choose 3 books to read ever again, what would they be? – Most of the books I read are parts of series. I’m going to bend the question and count each series as one work. So there, nyah nyah. 1: Anne McCaffrey’s “harper hall” trilogy. 2: The Eddings’ “Belgariad”. 3: Stephen Donaldson’s “Mordant’s Need” double-book set. If I really wanted to abuse the question, I’d take McCaffrey’s entire Pern set and all of the Eddings’ Belgarath-centric works, but that would be greedy. Oh wait, I am…
    • If you could only choose 4 things to eat or drink ever again, what would they be? – French bread pizzas, those Stouffer’s things. Orange juice. Vegetable-beef soup w/ crackers. Hot cocoa.
    • If you could only choose 5 people to ever be/talk/associate/whatever with ever again, who would they be? – Let’s see, who would I be willing share my cocoa with? And how do I answer this question without pissing off everyone I leave out? Sheesh. What a mean question. If I take Wendi and the kids, that leaves only two slots. If I’m allowed to discount my family, I could select: Mari Toshimitsu, Benjamin Studtmann, Heather Dvorak, Steve McMullen and, say, some random really cool famous person. And yes, I know I haven’t talked to Steve in years. And also, yes, there are online friends I didn’t name, but most of those I haven’t really met so I wouldn’t (yet!) feel comfortable adding them to my list. See how hard it is to do this without slighting large numbers of people? The Friday Five folks should be ashamed of themselves. Sheesh.

    Friday Five

  • Spirited Away

On a whim, I checked nausicaa.net to see if any Portland OR showtimes had been added for the latest Miyazaki film to reach the USA. Imagine my surprise when I see that it’s playing the Regal Fox Tower 10 (downtown Portland, right next to Pioneer Courthouse Square) starting this very day!

(And payday isn’t until Tuesday. Grrr.)

Go see this film. I insist. Even better, hook up with me mid-week for a big group viewing. Yeah! “Spirited Away.” A couple of hours filled with joyous Miyazaki anime goodness. You know you want to.

  • Jumping Cats

Thanks to my neighbor at leuschke.org, we are proud to present some jumping cats.

It’s cute. The perfect anodyne to a crazy and stressful workday. You’ll see. Would I lead you astray? (The cats were strays, but I digress.) I promise, no Flash animation is involved.

  • Sniffleupagus

For those of you (all two of you) who noticed that my iMood hasn’t changed in a while… no, it’s not laziness. I really have been ill the entire time, and there’s no end in sight.

I’ve got one of those damned annoying colds that never really knocks you out flat but also never goes away. I’m constantly wavering between a state of dazed functionality and feverish misery, punctuated by sniffles, sneezes and the occasional coughing fit.

Why yes, I have always been the sickly child. Had I been born a plains-dwelling grazing animal, I’d have been culled from the herd by natural selection a long time ago. Bah.

Starve a cold, feed a fever, my ass. What do you do when your cold includes a fever? Stupid homily anyway.

  • More Fun With Streaming Audio

Streaming audio is dead. Long live streaming audio.

Months after the complete dismantling of our streaming audio systems, Entercom wants to start a streaming audio system. This time, however, it’s solely for the use of program directors around the company. Guess who gets to put together the prototype server?

Shortly after noon today, I put Rosey and The Fan online with one audio channel each. The machine is a Pentium-II 400MHz with about 192 MB of RAM and an M-Audio Delta-44 audio card. Sadly, I’m using the Windows Media Encoder to source the streams. For the money it’s the easiest way to serve two simultaneous audio streams from the same Windows-based platform.

Before the zealots in the audience get all fired up about my obvious failure to avoid using Microsoft products, I’d like to state that the purpose of my efforts is to create a system that any of my peers in Entercom can set up on their own. This rules out such arcana as Icecast under Linux.

Now that we have stereo input on both streams, the next step is to torture-test the rig so we can write up specific hardware requirements as well as installation procedures and get that info out to the markets that need it.

Some days I really love my job.

(No, you can’t have the address of the server. It’s only on the company network, so it wouldn’t do you any good. Sorry.)
