  • Are you sure it’s my heart that’s lonely?

The results of my BBCi “Lonely Hearts” quiz read thusly (tooltip emphasis and commentary mine):

    Describing Yourself

Younger men are keen to advertise their earning potential to prospective partners. Words like educated and professional give the impression that you can provide for a partner, even if they don’t yet have the money in the bank.

    You picked “Funny, Intelligent”.
    Category: Social Skills

You really want the world to know what a fun guy you are, which is great. Women rate social skills highly in a partner. They may have evolved this instinct for verbal courtship to keep males around. This was important because males had a natural temptation to abandon a female after pregnancy.

    You picked “Caring”.
    Category: Commitment

You are offering commitment, which women put at the top of their wish list. Women see you as someone who will stick around and provide for a baby. Some men emphasise this quality to compensate for a lack of wealth and power (which women also find attractive). In evolutionary terms, your preference for a woman who can show commitment is likely to result from a desire to ensure the paternity of your children.

    Describing Your Partner

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but twenty-something men have low standards. Once they reach 30, their standards rise because they’re raking in the cash, pushing up their value in the Lonely Hearts market place. However, age and attractiveness rate highly with all men, regardless of their age.

    You picked “Sensual”.
    Category: Sexiness

Your woman needs to be able to light a fire in your loins. You may be surprised to know that sexiness is low down the list of qualities men request of a woman. Attractiveness is much more important to men because it is an indicator of a woman’s fertility.

You picked “Confident, Good sense of humour”.
    Category: Social Skills

Your partner needs to be the light of any social occasion. Beware, her chatterbox qualities could drive you to distraction. Social skills are high on most men’s list of preferred qualities, but attractiveness and youth are the big winners. Women tend to value social skills much more highly than men do.

  • Past, Present, Future – Round Thirty-four

PAST: What was the first book you can recall reading?

PRESENT: What are you reading now, or if applicable what’s the most recent book you read?

FUTURE: Name some books you’ll be adding to your personal library when time and finances permit.

I was a quarter of the way through “Rise of a Merchant Prince” by Raymond E. Feist when I realized there was a PPF that needed preparing. (For the record, I’ll be skimming through large portions of that particular book. Watching Roo Avery make an ass of himself for several hundred pages isn’t my cuppa, so I’ll be looking for the other plot threads.)

As always, I beg of you to leave a comment so we know you were here and felt inclined to answer, so we can find and enjoy those answers. When you link back, please use the following useful permalink: http://greyduck.net/ppf/

    Thank you all, yet again!

  • And the award for “Best Try” goes to…

Thanks to Celina for this bit of amusing linky goodness:

Study: Fellatio may significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer in women

(For the parody-impaired, please note that the website address does not include the letter sequence C, N and N.)

UPDATE: And on that note, let’s not forget this little button…

  • Another ducky survey.

Now isn’t that just precious. Go ahead, take the quiz. And, thanks Tracy.

  • NRK = Anarchy

Today was Gustav’s birthday. His present from the company? A swift boot to the rear. His co-host, Daria, has also been silenced though she may yet find a place elsewhere in the company. And let’s not forget Jayn, about whom I recently wrote nice things, and whose birthday was quite recent. She’s gone too.

As far as the company was concerned, NRK had become two radio stations. The Marconi portion, which had a particular sound and attitude and was bringing in great ratings, and the rest of the dayparts, which sounded and performed differently. Today the powers-that-be swung the axe and have initiated great changes in the station’s line-up.

The Marconi show is going to Seattle to become a syndicated morning show, airing there and here in Portland. The other timeslots will be filled by talent brought in from other markets.

Love it or hate it, that’s how they want to play things. I’m going to miss The Mighty G, Daria (who said those nice things about me a while back) and Jayn (who’s just one of the coolest people you could ever be lucky enough to meet).

I admit I’m sort of apprehensive about the sort of people they’ll be replaced with. Now would be a good time for positive thinking… if I didn’t know the business too well to be anything but darkly cynical.

So. I wonder if one of the new guys is going to decide he needs a chat room. *smirk*

  • See Jayn. See Jayn deal.

My Monday hasn’t been too bad so far, but the same can’t be said of Jayn. She’s faced mysterious computer troubles and clue-impaired listeners while managing a frantic round of contesting. I figure if there was a Cirque de Soleil act for juggling lunacy, she’d be a shoe-in for lead performer.

While I was paying a brief “house call” to make sure her studio GP was working again, I was treated to what she later insisted was only a sample of how her Monday’s been treating her:

Caller: Hi, I was wondering how I can pick up my prize.
Jayn: Well, you just come down to the studio and pick it up at the front desk. Do you need directions?
Caller: I know how to get there. So, um, do I need to push the NRK button when I get there?
Jayn: No, there’s a door, you just pull on it and come right in…

    (another call)

Jayn: … what city do you live in?
    Winner: Portland
    Jayn: What’s your ZIP code?
    Winner: Oregon
Jayn: Ah, I got that hon’. I need your ZIP code.
    Winner: Oh.

So if you’re an NRK listener and you call in during Jayn’s show today, please be gentle with her. She’s a very nice woman who’s rapidly approaching the end of her patience, and she deserves a little kindness. Thanks!
