  • It’s a beautiful day

Perhaps it isn’t a terribly profound observation, but some days are simply better than others. Take today, for instance. I got a ham and cheese omelette for breakfast, a half hour or so of quiet family togetherness, a warm sunshine sky over my head as I took the bus to work, and a fairly quiet day at the office.

Not only that, but there’s been some success with synchronizing my Palm Pilot with Groupwise. Inbox, tasks, appointments and notes are all exchanging correctly. Now that I have AvantGo installed I can pretty much stop using the HP 620LX entirely. Well, except as an alarm clock. It makes a great alarm clock.

Think about that for a moment. The best use to which I can put my $850 Windows CE palmtop unit is as an alarm clock. And that, folks, tells you all you need to know about Windows CE.

  • Fancy Anvil Awards

The kids and I watched the Cartoon Network 1st 13th Annual Fancy Anvil Awards Show Program. It was moderately cute, and the kids probably got more out of it than I did. If you’re curious, you can read my review in the TV section. Long story short, though, is that it’s two hours spent watching Cartoon Network original material with some humans and Looney Tunes thrown in for flavor.

  • A birthday present I’m glad I didn’t get

Of all the things I could have gotten for my birthday, I think I’m glad I didn’t get an asteroid impact.

Turns out that on the 8th of March, a Tunguska-calibre asteroid passed close to the Earth, almost as close as the Moon is. Scientists didn’t know about it until after it had passed because it came from the direction of the sun, a literal blind spot in the effort to catalog near-Earth objects in space. Follow the link below to the CNN article and related information.

  • Birthday Greetings

Turns out that someone I know turned 19 today. Yes, that’s right, #KNRK’s very own peach-pit is a year older and a day wiser.

In related news, fellow “blogger” Kymberlie is also celebrating the ticking over of another year on this planet.

Happy birthday to both of them! March birthdays rock!

  • Ooo, a date!

Last night was a date night for Wendi and I. We had dinner, breakfast-style, at the venerable Hot Cake House. Following that we spent half an hour finding a parking spot near Cinema 21 so we could catch the 7:00 showing of Metropolis.

I’d like to take a moment to point out the fact that, in all the years I’ve been catching limited-run films at Cinema 21, I’ve never sat through a “coming attractions” segment there without seeing at least one advert for a gay film. No, I’m not a homophobe or gay-basher. I just find it amusing that after all these years, indie filmmakers still treat gay subject matter as edgy and unique. Oh look, those two guys on the screen are in love. So what? Does the movie have anything else going for it?

It’s entirely possible that I’m hopelessly jaded when it comes to the art-film scene. So be it.

Anyway, check the Films review section for my take on Metropolis. And do it soon, since it won’t be in a theater near you for very long, if at all.

  • If I had homies, I’d shout out to them.

Just because I’m a nice, wonderful, loving human being, I’m posting this quick journal entry at the request of one of the denizens of #KNRK.

You see, longtime channel regular peach-pit insisted that I hurry up and post something in my journal so she’d have something to read while she’s drying off after her shower. She especially wanted me to write about how cool she is. She’s so cool, in fact, that she doesn’t have a website or anything geeky like that for me to link to. Sorry, boys, no hot pics of peaches for you!

While I’m here, I should say hello to folks like monkeyfoo and IRQuick and Glytter and, and, let’s see… meshuga and shegirl and probably a few other channel regulars that peaches will remind me about immediately after she reads this journal entry.

For the record, the #KNRK chat channel is something I created, and took down, and created again by the request of my employers. They keep insisting that radio station KNRK needs a “chat room,” but as soon as they actually try using it they remember that technology stuff is way, way beyond their ken. Whoops. So #KNRK lives on as a kind of quiet getaway from the rest of the digital world.

If you’re horribly bored some time, pay a visit. I can guarantee that you’ll still be bored when you leave, but maybe you’ll meet one of the fine freaky denizens of the channel while you’re there.
