... "Nothing, you say? Nothing?" He wheeled his horse and pointed to a soldier, who sounded three sharp notes on a horn. Thom and I both braced for an attack which didn't come.
I admit right here for the record that I made one disastrous error in judgement during this assignment. Our entry and exit from the castle that night had been so smooth that I was certain we weren't detected. I was right about that, but I also assumed that since nobody knew we had been interested in talking to Monique that she would remain safe until Angelique could officially set her free. Therefore I chose not to set up any kind of monitoring in her quarters or on her person.
One of these days I'm going to learn not to underestimate the depths of cruelty men will sink to in the name of power.
Sadly, it was Angelique who saw it first. From the nearest tower, a figure in a white gown plummeted to the ground. I almost moved to arrest her fall, but then I saw the arrows. Queen Monique was dead before her body left the parapet.
Thom gasped in horror, Angelique screamed, and the jackass who'd just ordered the queen's death ordered his soldiers to take us into custody. I'm afraid that I became more than just a bit angry. I lifted off the back of my horse and shouted to Thom, "Shield! Protect the Princess!"
"No!" he yelled. "This bastard is mine!"
I grinned down at him. "Fine. But wait first. Just wait. I'll be right back." Then I hovered before the suddenly nervous lordling. "I warned you. You didn't listen. And you killed that woman for no reason except to cause pain. I'm going to let Thom kill you, oh yes. But first you're going to see what happens when people piss me off."
With that, I teleported into the center of the castle courtyard. I reached out with my kinetic energy and grabbed every stone in the entire building. Then, I lifted. I yanked the entire castle off of its foundations. Once I had it off the ground, I started disassembling. I pulled the walls apart from each other, catching the servants before they could fall to the ground. They weren't going to pay for what had just happened, I made sure of that. I gathered them all in a circle underneath where I hovered, then set a shield above them for extra safety.
Brick by brick, stone by stone, timber by timber I tore the castle apart. Each brick and stone was piled on top of Monique's body. The timbers I simply tossed into the forest two miles away. I built a massive cairn out of the remains of Thornwood Keep.
The entire process took about five minutes, after which I removed the shield I'd set over the serving staff and then drifted back to where Thom and Angelique waited. I'd worked through the worst of my anger, but that didn't let our new best friend off the hook. No way was I done with him yet.
"You're lucky, lordling. I'm going to let Thom kill you. He's a decent sort of man, so he'll probably just skewer you with his sword. If he hadn't laid claim to your head you'd be dealing with me. I'm not a decent sort of man. I'm mean. I especially hate men who hurt women just because they can. I'd tear you limb from limb, slowly. I'd burn your carcass from the inside out. With the minutes you have left, you might want to offer your God a prayer of thanks that I'm not going to be your executioner." I finally had to turn away before I gave in to temptation.
"He's all yours, Thom." ...
