... Yes, I know what people say about me. Those people also say that I'm a ruthless and amoral bastard. They're wrong, of course. I wasn't born out of wedlock.
"So," I began, "how difficult do you want to be about this?"
"About what?"
"Take your pick. There's this little matter of an infatuation between yourself and my young pupil. We could also talk about the process of restoring you to your rightful throne in Devar. That's an easy one, though. Thom and I will be in charge of the process, no matter what those supposedly holy men have to say on the subject. So why don't we talk about you and Thom?"
"A lady does NOT talk about such things."
"Which shows how little you know about the things ladies talk about. Most ladies of my acquaintance can send grown men fleeing from the room in terror when they start talking about 'such things.' I'll keep this simple for you, Your Highness. I don't care if you and Thom end up sharing a tent on the way to Devar. Hopefully he knows how to treat a virgin, but that's your problem and not mine." She blushed furiously but held her tongue. "You and I must agree on a few points, however."
After a deep breath she said, "And those would be?"
"One," and I pointed one finger at her, "it is of utmost importance that this mission succeed without dangerous complications, so you WILL NOT presume to order Thom around any time he's not sharing your bed. If you cause me trouble by playing on his loyalties you will discover all new kinds of pain and misery. Are we crystal clear on this, young lady?"
She gulped and nodded.
I held up a second finger. "Second point. No matter how well you two get along, no matter how deep an attachment you may feel for him, when this mission is over he will be gone forever. You absolutely cannot make or ask for any lasting commitment. Don't even hint, not once, that this relationship is anything more than a temporary liason. A girl can afford to indulge her fantasies, but a Princess cannot. Are you able to be both a girl and a Princess, Your Highness?"
She nodded again. "I... believe I understand you, sir."
"You'd better. If you break his heart, I promise that I WON'T interfere in what happens after."
The Princess looked at me strangely, then comprehension dawned and her eyebrows raised up. "Oh." ...
