Excerpt Special: The Interview
... She frowned. "I do not like it. My family has ruled Devar for nearly seven hundred years. Most of those men came to power while my father wore the crown. Why should we change things now?"
"Change is part of life." I found a pebble on the ground and teleported it onto the table. "Has this rock always been smooth and round?"
"I... suppose not. It's from the river, isn't it? The rocks and pebbles in rivers are shaped smooth over many years."
"But it's still a rock. Think of yourself as the result of seven hundred years of laying in the riverbed. Still hard, but now also smooth. The rock gives part of itself up to become so. All it loses are the hard edges and pointed bits, though. If you're willing to let go of the little things that don't matter, you can remain what you truly are and still be more appealing to the strangers who happen upon you."
Thom chuckled. "Quite the philosopher, Andrew. I wouldn't have thought it of you two weeks ago."
I grinned back and said, "Some of us are rocks, others are diamonds. A fair amount of chipping away has gone into my persona, young pupil."
Angelique contemplated my little analogy for a moment, then her face brightened and she proclaimed, "The smooth stones are also the ones chosen for skipping and slinging, are they not? Being the ones that fly faster and straighter?"
Shrugging, I answered, "Efficiency and beauty are often found in the same form, Your Highness. Not always, however, so be careful of taking any analogy to extremes."
"That's not very nice, Andrew," she complained. "It was a terribly profound thought and you know it." The sparkle in her eye gave away her false irritation, however. I had to laugh, and the other two soon joined in. ...
