• Blog cheerleading, the meme of the future!

At the end of a long day, it’s fun to think up new blog memes with which to torture the websurfing masses…

Emily: i’ll claw my way to the top somehow
me: I’ll cheer you all the way. 😉
    Emily: whee!
Emily: Blogger cheerleaders. now there’s a concept.
me: Hmm, I wonder if we can come up with a new meme for that. Because, after all, spawning a cool new meme is what it’s all about, right?
    Emily: oh totally 🙂
me: If you have blogger cheerleaders, you then form them into a blogger cheerleading squad.
me: And then you make them do cheers, and perform acrobatic feats.
Emily: and they do stuff to get you hits, i guess
    me: Yes!
    me: “Gimme an E!” “E!” “Gimme an M!” “M!”…
    Emily: yay!
me: And, of course, they have to wear short skirts.
    Emily: even the male cheerleaders?
me: Um, unless they’re men. Unless the men want to.
    Emily: right
    me: Kilts.
    Emily: yes!
    Emily: cheer kilts!
me: Do they then have to do their cheers in a brogue?
    Emily: Hm
    Emily: Yes.
me: Tough requirements for the cheerleading squad then… “Must be fan of blog. Must look good in kilt. Must be reasonably athletic. Must be willing and able to drive traffic to said blog. Must be able to cheer in a Scottish brogue.”
me: Assuming an all-male squad, I suppose.
Emily: they better look good in the kilt.
me: Indeed. We don’t anyone with scary legs.
Emily: which would be the colors of the blog’s design?
me: Maybe, but then you’d have to commit to a color scheme for the course of the cheerleading season.
    Emily: Hm yeah.
me: At least until the quarter-finals, when you can break out the stunning new color scheme to quash the competition in the finals.
Emily: Do they date the blog football players?
    me: Only if they’re lucky.
me: (I cannot believe I just said that. WHAT blog football players?)
    Emily: i’m sure they exist…in some universe…
me: What kind of field would you play blog football on?
    Emily: A virtual one, perhaps
me: No… we get one of those old Coleco hand-held football games!
    Emily: hee hee
me: It makes the team a lot smaller, thus easier to pay the salaries.
    Emily: they get salaries?
me: You just know they’ll go on strike if they don’t. Unless we get REALLY dumb players who will work for peanuts. Or cheerleader nookie.
Emily: Hm I was picturing a volunteer thing
Emily: but then, i’m stuck in high scho0ol mode 😛
    me: You’ll get over that.
    Emily: i hope so.
    me: *grin*

Thanks to Emily for several minutes of fun and a few disturbing mental images. No, not that image! That image is really rather nice.

  • Ancestry Friday Five

I can’t believe Mari got her FF done before I did. I am so lame.

    • What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from? – Er… a little bit of everything. I’m your average American Mutt, really.
    • Of those countries, which would you most like to visit? – Mars. I’m sure that the sunsets on Mars are spectacular.
    • Which would you least like to visit? Why? – The surface of the Sun. I’ve never been into tropical climates.
    • Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage? – Yes. I exercise the big healthy brain that my early-hominid forebears bequeathed to me.
    • Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)? – I don’t know their names, sorry. And when you get right down to it, each one of us is the product of so many people… does it matter?

I guess this one wasn’t really targeted at me, what do you think?

  • Weekly Recap, the sequel

Proving that I really can follow through on a threat… er, promise. Here’s the second installment of the Weekly Recap.

    • We’ll start this week off with Sar of Dragon Ink, who almost died Monday. It was something of an aquatic misadventure, and she’s all better now. She then deliberately endured a cavalcade of bad bridal fashion, then felt the urge to share a really really long multipart survey with her readers. And finally, she shares with us the song she sings when she thinks nobody’s listening. We all have a song like that, don’t we?
    • The good Captain Rooba has a very busy schedule, a portion of which he detailed for us early in the week. And then he had a brief brush with greatness, which all agreed was damned cool.
    • On the downside, Madame Sinister‘s uncle died this week. Among the things that she finds depressing about this event is that at this funeral, her uncle won’t be the one providing levity during a time of sorrow. We also get some examples of family foibles during get-togethers, and a happy recap of the vacation the good Madame recently returned from. There’s also a reaffirmation of the fact that some salesfeebs are just plain evil, no matter what business you’re in. (Disclaimer: I work with a building full of salespeople. Many of them are not people I would describe as “salesfeebs” but our building has been cursed with such from time to time. Luckily they tend to get weeded out fairly quickly. You can now resume breathing evenly, if you are offended by my terminology.)
    • The proprietess of Argephontes has gone on some sort of vacation or trip, though we did get to see her frantically prepare at the last minute for said trip.
    • Jessy had one hell of a blogging week. For one thing, she more-or-less survived the Blogathon; the evidence is all there. Lots of evidence. She seems to have catnapped fairly often, which apparently doesn’t count as cheating. There was also a bad-karma moment when someone took verbage from the private part of her website and made it public. Bad person, bad! No biscuit! And I won’t even go into detail about Mango or Vanilla wipes. Eewww.
    • Our friend at debris.com didn’t post anything this week. At least not as of about noonish Pacific time. On a similar note, Q Daily News was also not updated this week.
    • Melpster, on the other hand, had a banner week for posting. She started by participating in the revival of the mash note, then gave us a detailed list of 80’s songs that remind her of her youth. She then took a whole slew of surveys, one of which taught her that “Scottish Fold” is not a sexual position. Her work schedule was posted again, more for her benefit than ours, and she finished up with some more 80’s songs. Because you can’t have too much nostalgia, baby!
    • Emily dreams a lot. Okay, so we all dream a lot, but she writes her dreams down more often and with more detail than I could ever manage. She also takes good pictures, some of which she shared with her fans this week. We are also treated to another round of “stream of silliness” AIM chat, as well as some search-engine queries of no small strangeness. I’m now going to bait Google by mentioning one of them here: rocket power orgy.
    • The fluttergirl is finally off on her latest road-trip, but she made sure to burn oodles and oodles of entertainment material before she left. I think I’ll let someone else tell her that KaZaa is evil. She shared some sweet memories of past silliness while bubble-bathing, then obsessed over Our Lady Peace just a little. And Jay Mohr is an ass. Who gave this guy his own TV show? Again?
    • Snappy the Clam is still having medical misadventures, laments the lack of Flash 6 for Linux, and is considering the creation of an essay on the topic of weblogs and journalism. Seeing as how he’s a keen follower of such issues, I highly encourage him.
    • Firda, the Weblog Wannabe, discovered that she’s 70% dateable and 46% geek. She also found some more games for us to play as well as various kinds of furniture.
  • Mini-Vacation Recap

Yes, I went to the department-head meeting. Yes, I downloaded the Maximiser data at 10:00. No, I didn’t get sis’ CD-ROMs mailed off. (Whoops.)

We did, however, eventually get down to the Family Fun Center for some… er… fun. This time we started with the bumper boats. I love bumper boats, and these have squirtguns. Muahahahaha.

To dry off, we played 18 holes of minigolf. The huge group of kids (did their shirts read YMCA? I think so.) let us play through as they massed at the first couple of holes. Once past them, we had nobody in front of us (or behind, really) for the rest of our game. No pressure! At one point I got down on the astroturf and blew on Erica’s golf ball to make it go in. Needless to say we took very little of the game seriously, which is the best way to play minigolf anyway. Scorecards? What fer?

After that we split up, Wendi and Erica taking on the go-carts while Alex and I tried out the arcade. Oddly enough our first game was air hockey, and it was just about the most fun we had in the arcade. We’ve pretty much decided “to hell with the arcade next time.” The money would have been better spent on another round of bumper boats.

Once our arcade tokens were finally exhausted we decided to head out, grab some snacks and head for home. By way of Future Dreams. While at Safeway (of all places) we noticed the paperback for the most recent Raymond Feist “Krondor” novel. This computer-game-based series isn’t bad, but it also isn’t all that superb. We picked this one up anyway, and… it isn’t bad, but it also isn’t all that superb. (Why no, in fact, I’m not going to waste time with a full review. Why yes, I did finish reading it in a mere three hours.)

We came home, kicked back, prepared and enjoyed some chocolate chip cookies, read comics and novels and such, and then Wendi and her dad took off for another late night of karaoke. Meanwhile I got online, read and replied to my usual ultralight stack of email, then decided to post a recap of my vacation day.

Um, I guess that’s everything up to this point, isn’t it? Tomorrow it’s back to the salt mines for me. I hope I’m up to it. I’m a little depressed about the conjunction of my small raise and the increase in insurance deductions, but I’m trying very very hard not to let the depression get ahead of me. Wish me luck.

  • Taking The Day

After a busy stretch at the office, and with both my newly-improved paycheck and Wendi’s double-gig-weekend payday coming, we decided that tomorrow should be a day off. We’re going to run errands, then we’re going to take the rugrats down to the Family Fun Center in Wilsonville. We checked it out on Sunday (we played minigolf, actually) and enjoyed it enough to want to go back during the week when it might be just a smidge less crowded.

I still have to show up for the department heads meeting at 8:00, and at 10:00 the Spring book Maximiser data gets released. *sigh* So I can’t leave until after that’s installed. Then we run to Future Dreams for the comics, and to the bank to set up my account. (I get my own debit card so that I can’t possibly screw up the family finances whenever I go out to lunch or something. This way I can pay my Future Dreams and Northwest Link monthly bills on my own, yay!)

In other news, I just finished burning and labelling the six CD-ROMs of anime music videos I promised my sister as a wedding present. I’ll package them up for mailing tomorrow morning while I wait for the Maximiser data to be released.

At least I’ll get most of a day off, dammit.

  • Versus Man, Versus Monster

It’s done, it’s posted, and if you have the bandwidth for a 38 megabyte download I encourage you to check it out.
