• Oh-Dark-Thirty

It’s 11:00 on a Friday night. Ordinarily I’d be parked in front of the television, or perhaps playing a bit of Diablo II with The Missus.

Not tonight, though. I’m at the office, watching large audio files transfer from one server to another, one at a time, one after another, one by one.

The current estimate is that this process will be completed early on Sunday morning. What am I doing here, then? Babysitting. I simply cannot get any rest until I’m reasonably confident that the file transfer won’t go horribly wrong during the first few hours. This is just a part of how seriously I take my job.

Wendi’s due to pick me up as soon as she wakes tomorrow morning, which will probably mean I leave at 9:00. Don’t worry about me… I have my internet and my music to keep me going. Life’s really not that bad.

I apologize for being moderately incoherent. It’s been a long day. Oh yes, and that new version of Qualitap won’t land until early next week, right about the time I’m on that department-heads retreat. Mwahahaha.

Let’s see, a recap (oh no!) of recent events:

I’m starting a new music video. It’s on the order of a special request, and as soon as the idea took hold in what passes for my brain I couldn’t resist the idea of making it work. Film at eleven, as it were.

Wendi has her airline tickets, as does her father. Next Wednesday afternoon they’ll be leaving for a week. I’ll be on vacation, more or less. For me the word “vacation” tends to translate as “watches kids for a few days while praying the phone never rings.” I’ll manage to enjoy my time off anyway, have no fear.

The itinerary for the Dept. Heads retreat next week has been distributed. Meetings, meals, repeat. Oh, and there’s some golf scheduled, but I opted out of that. There are worse ways to spend the two days before my vacation starts…

I have tried Winamp 3. There are some inventive skins available for it, but do they all have to be impossible to actually use? Note to skinners: We want to actually use the software too.

I’m taking the laptop home this evening. If all goes well, I’ll get a chance at finishing off my remaining TMTT episodes over the next few days. I’d like to have that project completed for my own peace of mind, thank you. I’m still closer to completing my Thumbnail Theater than EK is on hers, though. Nyah nyah nyah!

  • When I said DBZ stinks, this is not what I meant.

I haven’t completely forgiven Chuck for hiding his great 9-11 rant immediately after 9-11, but I suppose I’ll link to his latest bit of evil anyway. Ladies and gents, I link you…

  • Music is my life. Or is that sex?

Thanks to some tips from the creator of XMMS Infopipe, I have been able to restore the “Current Music” function to this website. This time around it’s less kludged (though still a bit) and details the current song position. If no song is playing, “Current Music” simply vanishes from the sidebar. Viola!

This is the kind of thing I do for fun. Maybe I need to get out more…

  • Artsy time-lapse movies rock.

Here’s something about me I bet you didn’t know: I love artsy time-lapse movies. This dates back to the mid-80s, living in Seattle, and going to see Chronos at the IMAX theater with my best friend Steve McMullen. (I wonder whatever happened to him.)

Chronos is short, but very very cool. You can, or could, buy it on VHS but it loses a bit of its appeal on the small screen. If OMSI ever wants my undying affection and permanent membership, they’ll arrange to show me Chronos on the OmniMAX some day. (Look at it this way: It’s gotta be better than watching a Star Wars prequel projected onto the inside of a giant dome.)

Ah. Apparently it is out on DVD. Note to friends: Buying me Chronos on DVD will make you my very bestest friend for life. Really.

Where I was going with this, before I got off on a rant about Chronos, was that I wanted to link to the website for Koyaanisqatsi, the other really cool artsy time-lapse movie I enjoyed back in the mid-80s. Turns out there’s a third movie in the now-trilogy, so they’re doing a wee bit of promoting for it. (For the record, Koyaanisqatsi is mostly cool but sometimes feels like it will go on forever. Powaqqatsi didn’t do much for me when I saw it. I’ll have to see about watching both of them again soon to see if my perceptions have changed.)
