  • Oddball Search Engine Theater 3000.

I’ve gotten used to seeing a lot of the same search queries land people here time and again, such as “cowboy bebop mp3” and “escaflowne movie review” and “pink hello kitty laptop” (and many variations thereof) and “transparent concrete” (?) and let’s not forget “kitten masturbation” (sickos). Oddly enough, searches for “greyduck” and “grey duck” combined only slightly outnumber those Bebop MP3 searches. Go figure.

Perusing the top queries list today, I note some interesting additions. For instance, I’m pretty sure that “bambalance” is a reference to a Captain Rooba entry from the Weekly Recaps. Someone searching for “melpster” may very well have been looking for, ah, Melpster. I hope. To the four of you who came here looking for “spanked cheerleaders,” I apologize for your disappointment. And last but not least, I also apologize for not having nearly enough Sailor Moon material here to account for all of you who have landed here because of Moonie-based searches like “sailor moon (or venus) music videos” and “sailor moon english genesis roms”. (I thought all of the SM games were on the Nintendo. You learn something new every day…)

  • Manic Monday, indeed

So I was at work for a number of hours yesterday, and one of the tasks involved upgrading a program called Qualitap to version 9.0. Hurray, it went swimmingly… or did it?

Thanks to the travails of hardworking salesfolks, we now know that Arbitron sent us the wrong damned version of Qualitap. Now I’ve downloaded the right damned version, and get to camp out here at the office tonight in an attempt to mitigate the damage and create a working Tapscan/Qualitap environment.

So much for parking myself in front of the DVD deck at home with my laptop and typing up a couple of TMTT scripts. Grr.

Update, 9:00pm PDT: No, the version I was told to download is still not the right version. Details here. I’m going home now so I can prepare to do this again tomorrow night. Bah.

  • Delayed and despondent

So much for my grand plan to have TMTT done by the end of the weekend. The DVD-ROM drive in the “big computer” doesn’t like the second disc of the Tenchi OAV boxed set. I Love Tenchi gave me nothing but trouble from the get-go right up to the twenty-minute mark when PowerDVD crashed. I was unable to make the disc play at all after that, even with a reboot.

Plan B is to use the DVD deck in the living room, but I’ll need my laptop to type up the script… and I won’t have that until tomorrow after a long, long day at work. Somehow I don’t think I’m going to be in the mood for more typing after the big chores I have awaiting me at the office.

TMTT will be completed late next week, by the looks of things. Then next weekend I can get started on my next music video…

  • On a similar note…

The Weekly Recaps. (Insert deep sigh here.) As much fun as the idea was, the execution felt like exactly that: Being executed. My trite attempts to sum up the content of a dozen other websites were more “miss” than “hit”. The minute you feel like you’re repeating yourself, it’s time to give up and move on.

This has nothing to do with the fact that I ran out of good ideas for movie references, either. (Seven was easy. Eight? Dunno.)

Put another way: Much as Argephontes discovered, doing weekly recaps is a lot of work. If you want to know what’s going on with my fellow journals and blogs, the list is there. Please read them. They are all entertaining and enlightening in their fashion, and most are better written than my humble efforts.

I’m thinking that perhaps this is part of my urge to create rather than simply spotlight the creativity of others. It’s time, dammit, and past time for me to do more of my own true art here… be it silly parody scripts or music videos or what-have-you.

After all, anybody can spend all their time linking to other peoples’ works. It doesn’t make for a very compelling reason to keep coming back when there’s nothing of yourself in your site…

  • Friday Five Recess

So it’s been a largely content-free week here at greyduck.net. I apologize for that. It’s not much fun to check a website regularly for new content only to find none.

And this post is no exception: I’m NOT doing the Friday Five this week, as I simply have nothing I want to share about my schooling. You, of course, are free to go forth and answer the questions as you see fit.
    Friday Five

  • Creative genius, no. Rabid fanboy, yes.

Nine episodes down, four to go as Sasami And Tsunami hits the TMTT archive. As cool as that is, what’s even cooler is that I’m getting referrals from ToastyFrog himself!

It is both disturbing and entertaining to me that there are much better TT variations out there than my modest little efforts. Take, for instance, the X Handpuppet Theater. Absolutely badass, I assure you. And we mustn’t forget EK’s lovely Cowboy Bebop TTs which inspired me to create TMTT in the first place. Perhaps most disturing of the links Toastyfrog provides isn’t to an anime-related Thumbnail Theater at all, but instead to a Fellowship of the Rings rendition. Fly, you fools.
