  • Scenes From Chez Snark: Oomph

I got home (apartment) from the house (we move next week) after a couple exhausting hours spent assembling furniture (living room TV stand & shelving). I told the lovely Vyx that I’m out of oomph. I’m oomph-free. You could call me Oomph-free Bogart.

    Silence.

    “No?” I asked.

    “No.”

“Not gonna dignify that one with a response?”

    “I know better.”

    “Aw, I love you too!”

I am a delight, as you can plainly see.

  • Quick Status Update

Here we are at March of 2024, heralded this morning in suburban Portland Oregon by… snowfall? Well, kind of. It “slushed” for about an hour. This month I turn 50-something, but I don’t even care about that because the main focus is getting moved out of the apartment and into the house.

I got the Internet stuff all working, including network drops in the other two places in the house which need them and WiFi coverage for the rest. We’re bringing over stuff one or two bags or armloads at a time, the stuff we don’t want The Movers touching. And they’re due in a bit under two weeks. Yesterday I told the apartment’s management that we’re on our way out (they get the keys back at the end of the lease, mind you).

We’ve done so much work, and there’s a mountain yet to do, which has left me almost no time for much fun at all. Not even Satisfactory! (Well, not much.)

I hope this is all worth it in the long run, because woof, I’m exhausted already.

  • Too Tired Can’t Post

Moving is exhausting. I’m glad I only do it only about once per decade or so now, instead of every few months like in my childhood.

And that’s why it’s been so quiet around here. If I’m not working, I’m either doing something related to the move (like filling boxes and wrangling utilities) or trying to get some downtime in (gaming, reading, watching shows, “vegging out” in one fashion or another). This week’s move-related activity? Getting the actual movers scheduled, because no way are we hauling beds and bookshelves and a couch and all those boxes of books and shiny platters from apartment to house all on our own. (Even if it is very close by.) Nor is there enough pizza in the world to bribe the local friends we have available to do so. Money is the answer, so money I shall spend.

We still have weeks yet to go on this stuff, so… bear with me. Hopefully there’ll be more fun on offer once we’re in place and at least somewhat unpacked.

  • Another Moving Adventure Begins

I didn’t want to say anything here when we put in the application, because we might have been passed over. I didn’t want to say anything until the lease was signed because something could still have gone wrong. Now that the property management company has a bucketload of my money, however, and I’ve started arranging utilities and whatnot, I guess I can say:

We’re moving into a house some time in the next month or so!

  • Hello From Below Freezing

Lovely weather we’re having lately, isn’t it? #pdxtst

By Friday night we dipped below freezing. By Saturday morning it was 20F, by Saturday night we were parked at 16F and the ground was covered in a mix of wind-blown snow and sleet. And that wind was gusting!

As of this writing (noon on Tuesday the 16th of January 2024) we’re right at 30F outside (thank you, Newentor Q7 weather station) with freezing rain expected to kick in over the next few hours. Presumably some time tomorrow we’ll get back above freezing again… for the first time in most of an entire week.

This isn’t the kind of winter we’re used to around here. Gee, thanks, global warming for screwing up the jet stream and enabling “polar vortex” events to become an annual feature of wintertime rather than a weird, rare weather event.

I just want to make it to the grocery store before the weekend, at this point. My needs are modest, but needs they still are.

  • First check-in of 2024

You know the year’s off to a fun start when you startle yourself awake several minutes before the alarm on the 3rd day of the year with the realization that you forgot to pay the rent and the electricity bill two days prior like you were supposed to.

The year’s not bad exactly, so far, but it’s certainly being weird. And that’s before we get into it being an election year. Ugggggh.

I don’t have as much to look forward to this year, entertainment-wise at least, so I’m going to have to make my own reasons to keep going. Like, I have a new Satisfactory (solo) save game to kick off now that “ChooChooingScenery” is wrapped up. The goal is to post more & better material about that as it begins and proceeds, both about what’s happening in game and what I’m doing around the game (planning, etc).

There’s also the ongoing (for now) co-op game with the kids, plus a possible new co-op game with someone from Discord. More on that when/if it happens.

Last year was a lot about music, this year may be a lot about (e)books. I’m ramping up my light novel reading, (not) helped by getting into the Ascendance of a Bookworm series which is a stack of reading all on its own. (They’re quite good, though.) Then there’s Apothecary Diaries to start in on, the Frieren manga to continue, and so on. Ask me about my rec’s! Oh wait, maybe those should become posts. Right. I know how this thing works, honest.

I stopped using what-was-Twitter, started using Mastodon more and Bluesky somewhat, but mostly my intent is to post things here first & foremost. I did much better at it last year! Some months I hit double-digit post counts! Not many, but some. Drifting away from “social media,” I take refuge in the land of RSS and such.

    Join me, won’t you?
