  • Dropcaps Begone

Okay, so I’ve stopped using the dropcaps. I realized (belatedly) that they’re going to wreak havoc with the redesign that’s coming just as soon as I get some free time to monkey with the code. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to look great, but it’s not going to like having big ugly dropcaps all over the place. Ah well. It sure makes starting one of these entries a helluva lot easier not to have to type “span class = dropcap” and so on.

  • Full Color Karel

We’re kickin’ it old-school here on greyduck.net. I’ve fallen back upon my old technique of using WebCam2000 on Ryoko (the Windows machine) to serve up the webcam images. This gives me several benefits, among which is the ability to beef up the refresh rate considerably.

I was pleased to learn that there’s a new maintainer for the WebCam2000 project. Let’s hear it for new free software!

  • Weblogs.com? Who cares?

No point checking in with weblogs.com to see if I’ve updated, since I’m no longer pinging their server automatically. It rarely worked, and even when it did work it made the process of adding journal entries take much, much longer. Bleah.

  • Webcam down for a time

I‘m afraid you can’t spy on me for a while. I’m having more technical difficulties with the 3Com HomeConnect USB webcam under Linux, so I’m taking the cam offline until the HomeconnectUSB project on Sourceforge catches up to what I need it to be.

Sorry, no more peering at my cluttered office all day, folks.

  • Can’t journal now. Playing. Go ‘way.

It was bound to happen before very long, I suppose. I found a supremely addictive space trading game for my Palm. If you want to lose several hours of your life and you own a Palm Pilot, check out Space Trader.

Think “Trade Wars” for the Palm OS, just without the multi-player aspect and without having to wait a whole day to get another few turns.

  • So Much For Homebrew

In a whirlwind frenzy (ooo, Diablo II reference!) of computer building, I assembled Amy and Michael’s new superbox the night before last and started installing Windows last night.

Only to find that the Epox motherboard we bought has a CMOS problem that makes it prone to not starting up after the machine has been run for an hour. Oh, great.

So today, I suspect, they’re going to take the motherboard back to Fry’s and see about getting another one. Once that’s accomplished I’ll see about building them a real live working computer. Wouldn’t that be nice?
