Q. Why am I being told that any file I open is "read-only," and why does it ask me to make a copy?

A. This is a known bug, probably never to be patched, in several Office products and versions. The quick fix is to go to Start, Run, and enter one of the following:

  • For Word, type "winword /r" and then Enter.
  • For Excel, type "excel /regserver" and then Enter. (Note: This also seems to fix the "transparent cells" problem.)
  • For PowerPoint, type "powerpnt /regserver" and then Enter.
  • For Access, type "msaccess /regserver" and then Enter.
